This is the bay where the cruise ships come in. In 2017 the cruise ships were in for about 8 hours about every 5 days or so. They are in on the west side of the pier and so there is no anchoring on that side. We anchored on the east side with all the pangas and tour boats. Anchoring is confusing there as some pangas are bow and stern and other charter boats swing freely. It’s a limited area and so swinging freely forces you to have limited scope in order to fit. We chose bow and stern but to do it again I wouldn’t bother. The wind is light and generally in a direction that works with the limited swell. Land breeze during the day and sea breeze at night.
The darsena is overcrowded and it makes dingy access a challenge. You may have to work in and around other vessels to access the floating docks. Our boat neighbor had several days of going under the deck of a large “party boat” catamaran to be able to access the backside of the floating dock.
The assistant port captain was confused as to why we were there. It was as if he had never dealt with a cruising boat coming in to check in with his office. He also told us we couldn’t anchor out here and that we needed to go to the Marina. This was in spite of another sailboat clearly anchored out with us. I’m sure that if we dealt with someone else it would have been no issue.
On the plus side there is wifi and easy access to stores. There is a large Chedraui Grocery store for provisioning and taxi’s are pretty cheap.
