CREW FAQ
If you are planning to join us as crew there are a lot of Frequently Asked Questions.
How much experience do I need to crew on Liquid?
For Coastal Passages - NONE!
You’ll understand more of what’s going on if you have more experience, but it’s not required.
We are happy to teach you the way we do things and help you get in the swing of things as quickly as possible.
We usually restrict crew for our offshore passages to "Past Crew". If you are interested in the longer passages with us please look into joining us for one of our shorter Coastal Journey's first. This way you can meet us and the boat and have a better idea what you are getting into. :-)
What qualities are helpful for being crew?
People who get along with others in smaller spaces will do best onboard. The is no privacy and small personal spaces.
Think Campers and Motorhomes.
And Boats.... :-)
More importantly, potential crew should be open-minded, willing to work as a team and content with limited resources.
Crew also need to have a minimum level of fitness and health. If you’re active in your daily life, you’ll probably do great offshore. .
What amenities are there aboard Liquid?
Liquid is a old school offshore sailing machine built for crossing oceans safely and comfortably not a modern charter vessel built for a simple party week in a limited area.
There is only one private cabin
The only privacy for the other berths is a curtain.
The main shower is in a bathing suit on deck.
The head is in the center of the boat for safety in rough seas. It's safe but not very private.
Laundry underway is in a bucket.
No hot water unless the generator is running.
On the other hand there is a fantastic extended full hard dodger and very well protected cockpit.
The Cockpit is deep, small and very safe.
The boat has really comfortable motion no matter what the weather.
Think of Liquid more like an "Expedition boat" than a weekend party machine.
What are the duties aboard?
Outside Duties include raising and lowering the anchor, raising / lowering sails, sail trim, steering (including hand steering), watch keeping, log entries and other general boat stuff.
Inside Duties include galley assistant and cleanup, interior cleaning and possibly helping to fix broken stuff .
Remember that you will be treated as fully capable crew (even if we need to teach you what and how things need to be done) :-)
What length of watches will I be standing?
Our watches are usually 3 on/6 off.
If we are doing a short coastal passage we usually do 1hr on / 3 hrs off so everyone can have a turn at the helm...
Will I be able to communicate with friends or family during the trip?
Yes.
Cell coverage is great near ports.
We are often near Coastal Cell Towers and get a decent signal anytime we are near a port. You should get a travel plan for the countries we will be in before you leave your home country to limit your data costs.
When on passage, you can send or receive texts through our Iridium Go satellite system twice per day (6am and 6pm).
These costs are in excess of your existing daily contribution and depend on current data rates. You could expect about $1 USD per message
What clothes and gear should I bring?

Will we be in port in time for my return flight?
We always plan to be in our final port 24 hours before the end of the passage.
This gives us time for the Port Captain and to sign crew off, but ask that you not schedule your return flight earlier than 3 PM on the final day of the passage.
Also just as important is that before returning home we usually plan a night ashore to celebrate a little before everyone goes back home. :-)
