Bahia Ballena
At first glance Bahia Ballena doesn’t seem to have that much going on. The bay is huge and can seem pretty empty even with a bunch of boats anchored there. There isn’t that much visible development visible onshore with just a few buildings and an old dilapidated pier on the south end. On top of all that depending on the wind and the swell it can get pretty rolly.
But if you dig a little bit and are willing to brave some manageable surf you’ll see why some people seem to really love this place.
There is actually a bunch of houses and resorts tucked away just behind the trees. Once you land your dingy in the south western end you can walk to a small bar and enjoy some beers with a great view of the bay.

You can buy pizza next door and a quick walk up the street takes you to the local store which is surprisingly well stocked. You can walk up to the road and grab a bus to the next town for better groceries and other supplies if you need anything more. If you want more you can even take the bus and do a day trip to Montezuma and hike to the waterfalls.
After that there is still more. You can take your dingy up to the pier, brave the sketchy steps and find someone to sell you some frozen, vacuum-sealed fish or shrimp!

If you choose to anchor at the north end there is a beautiful beach and as well as a river you could possibly take your dingy into for some exploring. We just did a dingy trip over from our anchorage on the south end.
All in all it’s a great stop with plenty to see and do.
One thing to note if you approach in the dark. There is A LOT of fishing activity around this area at night.

Anchoring
Anchor Depth – 23ft
We anchored near the southern end of the bay. Good holding. When the wind shifts it can get pretty little rolly. It was fine with a flopper stopper.
Water temp and Clarity
Clarity wasn't that great at about 5ft.

Dingy Landing
Land your dinghy in the south western corner of the bay. As you get a bit closer look for where the road drops down to the beach. We landmarked this spot and then tried to line up with a tree or something to lock the dingy to. There is some surf so depending on the tide you may need to time your entrance. Also the beach is very shallow here. At low tide you will need to bring the dingy a long way to get it above the tide line or to be able to lock it up.
Supplies
The Tambor Super Papa is surprisingly well stocked. It has three packed aisles and a decent produce and fruit section.
ANNOYANCES
It did get a little rolly at night when the winds shifted.
